In August 2010, Vera Bradley partnered with O The Oprah Magazine to hold a contest, featured in the In The KnOw promotional section of the publication, inviting readers to nominate an inspiring individual or organization who helps bring color to their community. To enter, readers were asked to submit an “I am colorful because …” essay, and submissions were reviewed by employees of O as well as select members of the Vera Bradley staff.
After evaluating all of the entries, The Minot Area Community Foundation nonprofit organization was awarded a $10,000 grant for their work designing, constructing and securing funding for a North Dakota playground suitable for children of all physical capabilities. The team organized more than 100 volunteers over 600 hours to assemble the area, complete with ramps, stimulation stations and wide platforms.
Individual winner Jean Yee received a getaway for two to the Vera Bradley Inn in Seaside, Florida, Vera Bradley products, and a gift basket filled with items from the O List, for her inspiring efforts overhauling a once-abandoned hospital; painting murals in the children’s waiting area. Yee and her team certainly enhanced the facility, now used to bring medical care to homeless families in need of medical attention, through vivid scenes and colors.
Congratulations to all of the winners!
